How does glucoWISE® measure my blood glucose levels without taking any blood? The glucose levels are extracted by a non-invasive technique which transmits low-power radio waves through a section of the human body, such as the area between the thumb and forefinger.

These areas have adequate blood supply and are thin enough for the waves to pass through the tissue. These signals are then received by a sensor on the opposite side of the glucoWISE® device, where the data about the characteristics of the blood within the tissue are collected and analyzed.

How is the glucoWISE® technology different from the competition? glucoWISE® utilizes two unique technologies to achieve unprecedented accuracy in non-invasive glucose measurements. First, we utilize high-frequency non-ionizing and safe to use radio waves around the 40 GHz range.

These waves are large enough to allow penetration through the tissue, yet simultaneously small enough to provide sufficient resolution of the blood regions inside the tissue. Second, our sensors have integrated micro-composite films which temporarily make the skin transparent to the radio waves when a measurement is initiated.

This ensures consistent readings across all people independent of age, or skin type and color. What is the current status? When will it be ready?

glucoWISE® is still in research and development. We have performed two small-scale human studies recently, and more studies are planned. We need to do this to ensure the device provides accurate readings for everyone. We will keep you updated on this section of our website.

This layer is made of silk, a well known biodegradable material. To measure glucose, the team chose a glucose fluorescent GF monomer composed of two parts. The first is a di-boronic acid, which binds to glucose in the interstitial fluid just underneath the skin.

The other is a hydrophobic fluorescent molecule, which changes shape and emits fluorescence when glucose binds to the acid. When glucose binds to the GF monomer, the monomer absorbs blue light and emits red light.

To test the sensor accuracy, the researchers implanted it onto the skin of a hairless diabetic mouse. They shone light onto the patch and collected its fluorescence using a camera while they intravenously injected the mouse with a glucose solution.

The patch could potentially be worn on any part of the body, said Yu. This is conjecture at this point since the researchers did not test any of these predictions in the study. According to Gregory Forlenza , a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of Colorado School of Medicine who was not involved in the study, the technology is a novel proof of concept, but it may not be exactly what patients are looking for.

Forlenza does research with Medtronic and Dexcom, which both manufacture blood glucose monitoring systems. A potentially more powerful application of the technology would be to use it in tandem with an insulin-delivery device, such as an insulin pump, Forlenza said.

Yu agreed that there are several steps and design considerations that need to be made before the sensor is ready for human use, but he remains optimistic that the technology will help patients with diabetes in the future.
