If you look at fasting in general, not only Ramadan, you see certain types of bacteria increasing. Unlike some other gut microorganisms, Lachnospiraceae can survive happily in an empty GI tract. Butyrate sends anti-inflammatory signals to the immune system, which could help reduce pain and other symptoms of gut dysfunction.

Butyrate also improves the barrier function of the intestines, Peppelenbosch says. This is, potentially, a very big deal. If intermittent fasting can turn down inflammation and also help normalize the walls of the GI tract, those changes may have major therapeutic implications. Lachnospiraceae is only one of several types of helpful bacteria that research has linked to fasting plans.

But at this point, there are still a lot of gaps in the science. The migrating motor complex refers to recurrent cycles of powerful contractions that sweep the contents of the gut, including its bacteria, down into the colon. Essentially, this motor complex behaves like a street-cleaning crew tidying up after a parade.

It ensures the gut is cleared out and cleaned up in between meals, via minute repeating cycles that fasting allows to be become more frequent. Ideally, Mayer says people could for the most part adhere to the kind of time-restricted eating program that allows a full to hours each day for the motor complex to work.

In other words, sticking to three meals a day and avoiding between-meal bites or nighttime snacks could be sufficient. Read More: The Truth About Fasting and Type 2 Diabetes. Some researchers have called it a helpful housekeeping mechanism, and it occurs naturally when the body goes without energy calories for an extended period of time.

But these improvements have not yet been demonstrated in real-world clinical trials involving people. Eran Elinav, principal investigator of the Host-Microbiome Interaction Research Group at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.

This is likely to have health implications, though what those are, precisely, remains murky. Read More: What We Know About Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Figuring out whether fasting could also lead to longer-term improvements is just one of many questions that needs to be answered. While plenty of unknowns remain, experts say that common approaches to fasting appear to be safe for most people. Even among people with metabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, research suggests that this form of fasting is safe, provided a person is not taking blood-glucose medications.

Also, there is very little research on more extreme forms of fasting, such as plans that involve going without calories for several days at a stretch.

These diets may turn out to be therapeutic, but they could also turn out to be dangerous. The body is not made to be eating all day. Contact us at letters time. lacaosa—Getty Images. By Markham Heid. In return, the brain controls eating behavior, while nutrients from our diet change the composition of the gut microbiome. As an observational study, this research cannot show a causal relationship between IER, weight loss, and the gut microbiome, but it does provide more evidence of a link.

The researchers suggest that long-term dietary intervention should be used to maintain weight loss and further clarify the relationship between the gut microbiome and the brain, and Costa agreed.

The types of gut bacteria affected by weight loss. How gut bacteria changes affect health. You can choose which days you fast, as long as there is at least 1 non-fasting day between them. Alternate-day fasting: This is similar to , but instead of fasting on 2 set days of the week, you alternate between days of eating as normal and days where you reduce your food intake.

Many people turn to intermittent fasting to improve their health. There are a number of possible benefits to the various methods, and recent evidence suggests intermittent fasting may also impact your gut health.

Intermittent fasting may also improve the function of your gut barrier , the layers of cells that form the lining of your gut, which let nutrients pass through while protecting you from diseases and toxins.

They also had higher levels of specific beneficial bacteria called Prevotellaceae and Bacteroidetes , which are associated with reduced markers for obesity and better metabolic health. The natural fasting that happens as you sleep gives clues as to how extended fasting might also help with the health of your gut barrier.

During this time, activity in the gut slows down and the cells in your gut lining are repaired. Scientists have suggested that lengthening this fasting time could help strengthen the gut barrier and, in turn, limit chronic inflammation , which can contribute to chronic health conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Research is ongoing, but it could help explain some of the reported benefits of intermittent fasting. Get occasional updates on our latest developments and scientific discoveries. No spam.

We promise. But everyone is different. With the ZOE at-home test , you can find the foods that work best for you and your long-term health goals. Probiotics are bacteria similar to those found in your gut microbiome, and scientists believe they have health benefits.

You can get probiotics from fermented foods such as live yogurt, aged cheeses, kefir, kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut.

Eating plenty of plants is also important for your gut health. Regularly eating plants rich in fiber and high-quality protein — for example, lentils, beans, nuts, and quinoa — can also help you feel fuller for longer. Eating lots of ultra-processed foods, with added sugar, fat, salt, and artificial ingredients, is linked to health conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

ZOE runs the largest nutrition and gut microbiome study in the world, with over 15, participants so far. Most of the studies we have for the effect of intermittent fasting on the gut microbiome come from mice.

These studies show several potential benefits, including increased microbial diversity, reduced inflammation, and increased production of beneficial microbial compounds known as short chain fatty acids SCFAs 3,4.

Intermittent fasting also improved cognitive function and increased levels of tryptophan a precursor for important hormones and neurotransmitters in the blood, suggesting the gut-brain axis may be involved in mediating the effects of fasting 3.

Another area of interest is the influence of the microbiome on our circadian rhythm — the internal clock that helps regulate your natural sleep and feeding cycles.

It turns out your gut microbiome has its own circadian clock; studies show that the composition and function of the microbiome fluctuates throughout the day, including changes in the production of SCFAs While certain things can disrupt this rhythm e.

Together, these studies have started to give us clues into the effect of fasting on the gut microbiome. Despite compelling evidence in animal studies, we still have a way to go to know how intermittent fasting affects the human microbiome, and in turn, our overall health.

Some of the best insights we currently have come from studies of individuals participating in Ramadan In the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, individuals fast from dawn to sunset.

Ramadan fasting practices have been shown to have many health benefits, including weight loss, reduced cholesterol and improved blood sugar levels Some studies have found that after Ramadan, individuals had increased levels of beneficial gut bacteria such as Akkermansia , Faecalibacterium and Roseburia 8 ,9.

Fasting also increased microbial richness number of different species in the microbiome and diversity how diverse and evenly spread out species are , and increased levels of the beneficial SCFA, butyrate 8,9,12 which are all generally associated with a healthy gut microbiome.

As mentioned before, there are several different types of fasting. When looking at the protocol, one study found that individuals who fasted had higher microbial richness compared to those who followed their usual eating patterns However, a different group of participants on the same fasting protocol lost weight, but there was no impact on the gut microbiome Another study looked at the impact of a longer fast on the gut microbiome and overall health.

The fasting-diet combination led to weight loss, reduced blood pressure, and altered immune response. However, there was no significant change in gut microbiome diversity, and changes observed in the types and amounts of bacteria present reverted back to normal after the period of fasting was over.

Importantly, individual responses to fasting were very different, and researchers could actually predict who would respond better to the diet intervention based on their gut microbiome at the start of the study.

So, is intermittent fasting good for the gut? Even more, the human studies we do have confirm what we already know — everyone has a unique microbiome, so everyone will likely respond to fasting or other interventions differently. We do know that what we eat, rather than when , has a drastic effect on the microbes living in our gut.

A diet high in fibre provides fuel for these beneficial microorganisms, and in turn, they provide us with substances that benefit our metabolism, immune system, and even mental health.

When considering how a fasting diet might impact your microbiome you might like to consider how it would fit into your lifestyle and impact the types of foods you consume.

Skipping breakfast, on the other hand, could naturally cut out gut-healthy foods like whole grain oats, yoghurt, or fruit. No matter what time of the day, incorporating more plant-based, whole foods into your diet can help improve the health of your gut microbiome.

It is important to remember that intermittent fasting is not for everyone and can be associated with some risks. It is not recommended for certain people, such as children, pregnant or lactating women or those at risk of an eating disorder If you are interested, talk to your healthcare professional to see if intermittent fasting is right for you.

You can easily compare your report insights side-by-side and measure the evolution of your gut microbiome over time.

As always, it is recommended that you do this under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
