Exercises to Flush Out Toxins & Cleanse Your Body

Here's what to know about how to detox on a way that's good for you and can have lasting positive effects. A detox is when you make concerted diet and exercise choices to help your body rid itself of toxins — something that it already does on its own naturally.

While the word "detox" may make you think of expensive powders and liquid diets, the truth is you don't need to do anything that drastic or restrictive to get a little cleanse.

To detox in a healthy way, you need to focus on movement and whole foods with healing properties. Below are 10 strategies to help cleanse and detox the body, reduce bloating and feel like you're getting your lifestyle and health back on track.

Drinking a glass of lemon water with either cold or warm water can help with digestion, as lemon contains pectin, a type of soluble fiber, which makes it a detoxifying addition to any drink or meal. Choosing warm water over cold may also make you feel more full.

After water, fuel yourself with food. Eating breakfast will benefit your metabolism after a night of sleep. Plus, taking time out of your morning to fuel your body intentionally is a great way to build trust with yourself when it comes to your health.

The only way to prove to yourself that you are ready and willing to take care of yourself is to, well, actually take care of yourself. When doing a mini-cleanse, the advice I give to clients is to skip the bread, cereal or any version of them at breakfast as they will cause your body to retain more water, and instead focus your attention on protein, which will provide satiety.

An egg -and-salmon scramble is a perfect combo of protein and metabolism-boosting omega-3s to start the day. Increasing your heart rate will mean an increase in blood flow. This, in turn, will help your body to flush out toxins all on its own. The takeaway here is to rev up your heart rate, break a sweat and get in a better mindset to kick it up a notch again tomorrow.

Make sure to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and at least one snack —absolutely no skipping meals! Eating consistently throughout the day will help you lay the foundation for ongoing healthy eating. This will ensure you are taking out excess sodium, artificial ingredients and sugar from your diet.

Also, ditch the salt shaker and instead use only herbs and spices to flavor your food. If it feels hard to avoid snacking on over-processed packaged foods or to forego sweets, try to remember that you don't have to do it forever.

Start with a day. If you can handle a whole day without the promise of Cheez-Its, take it one meal at a time. Tell yourself that you will eat healthy for just one meal and then try to repeat that when it's mealtime again. Meal planning and prepping in advance — it's easier than you think!

It is a lot harder to justify waiting in the fast food drive-thru, after all, if you have a gorgeous and delicious salad already made. Drink a cup of dandelion root tea with your afternoon snack. Trust me, this one is important. Dandelion can help improve digestion , and being properly hydrated is linked to everything from a healthy metabolism to energy and good skin health.

The idea goes back centuries. And sure, cleansing — or cleaning — is clear enough for bathing or mopping a floor. But how does a cleanse work in the human body? Do cleanses really deliver on their claims? The normal intestinal tract is teeming with bacteria.

While dietary changes, medications, and even exposure to other people and pets! Advocates of cleanses would argue it makes intuitive sense.

Predictably, the answer to whether a cleanse is a good idea depends on who you ask. There are claims about increased sex drive, better mood, and fewer cravings for junk food. According to the ads, the number of ways a cleanse can help seems endless.

For example:. Remember, health claims for cleanses have not been evaluated by the FDA. Read the product disclaimers before you buy and use these products!

Just as there is limited evidence of benefit associated with detox or cleanse programs, there is limited evidence of harm. However, there are reports of side effects and complications. Examples include:. Some recommended repeating the program periodically, so the cost can be considerable.

I know there are many people who find intermittent detox diets or cleanses useful, and firmly believe they improve health.

And the ads for these programs are filled with glowing testimonials. Day 12, no exercise, down 19 pounds! Leave the detoxification to the professionals: your kidneys, liver, and other self-cleaning organs of your body.

Robert H. Shmerling, MD , Senior Faculty Editor, Harvard Health Publishing; Editorial Advisory Board Member, Harvard Health Publishing. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting daily alcohol consumption to two drinks or less for men and one or less for women, and point out that the healthiest choice is not to drink at all.

In addition to keeping your liver busy during and after consumption, long-term heaving drinking can lead to alcoholic fatty liver disease , acute alcoholic hepatitis , and alcoholic cirrhosis, all of which impair your liver function pretty severely. Some experts, however, say taking on a detox may be a great way to jump-start healthier eating habits.

More on that below. As Pallini Winnifred , in-house R. advisor at FitDominium , defines a detox diet as a diet that aims to remove toxins and impurities from the body. She notes that some detox diet methods integrate supplements or juices more on these below.

Kieran McSorley, R. at Brentwood Physiotherapy Calgary , echoes that sentiment sharing that a detox diet typically involves eating whole, unprocessed foods, while avoiding food additives and artificial ingredients.

If you're sipping bone broth or slugging back celery juice for even one of your "meals," you're putting yourself at risk of hunger, moodiness, brain fog, and sub-par workout performance. Couple all this with a total lack of scientific evidence to support detox diet claims and you can begin to see why it's a bad idea.

If you're still determined to detox, speak with a doctor or another health professional, first. Some detoxes might result in the loss of muscle, and can complicate pre-existing medical conditions, such as kidney disease. Still, they're popular. What it is: Eating nothing but pulverized plants for the better part of a week is supposed to help your body rid itself of toxins, absorb nutrients, and provide mental clarity.

It only takes 20 minutes on the trampoline two or three times per week for this form of toxin flushing to work.

There are specific yoga poses that are beneficial to detoxifying certain organs, and these can be found in certain types of Pilates and martial arts as well. Doing yoga can help you feel cleaner on the inside and more energetic on the outside.

These few simple yoga poses will help you rid your body of toxins without any messy fruit or vegetable concoctions flushing your insides and destroying your blender.

Start with your feet together or hip-width apart, depending on what you find most comfortable, and bend your knees as if you were sitting on a chair. Your knees should be aligned with the center of your feet. Put the palms of your hands together in prayer position at the center of your heart before bringing your elbow to the opposite knee.

Squeeze your shoulder blades together and allow your chest to open up. This pose stimulates the liver, spleen, and digestive system while working to improve the spine and tone the abdominals. Start by sitting on the floor with both legs stretched out straight in front of you. Bend your left leg toward you and rotate your torso toward your left knee.

Then wrap your right arm around that knee so that the inside bend of your elbow cradles your knee. Simply rest in this position for several breaths before switching sides, and your body will naturally remove any impurities. Since the abdominal muscles are squeezed while in this pose, the kidneys and liver are stimulated.

As you relax from the position, blood flows into the organs, which initiates detoxification. Lie on the floor and bring your legs back over your head so that your toes are above your shoulders. If you are familiar with yoga, this is called the plow pose. Then place both hands on your lower back on either side of your spine and slowly bring your feet into the air.

Draw the stomach toward your spine and hold for a few breaths before lowering your legs back down to the plow position and returning to your original position lying flat on the floor. This position drains any accumulated lymph fluid from the legs into the upper half of the body, bringing it closer to the heart and making it easier for the body to flush it out.

Excess sweating might be caused by overheating or eating spicy food and can lead to dehydration. Laser hair removal is a great solution because the lasers target the hair follicles, which prevents the hair from growing back. Serious athletes have discovered that completely removing hair from the arms, legs, and other areas of the body reduces sweat and irritation and resistance, which is a boon for runners, cyclists, and swimmers.

Environmental toxins are virtually everywhere given their almost global nature; for instance, we don't think too much about the packaging food comes in, or the shampoo we wash our hair with — or even the air we breathe. Yet according to a article in Science , percent of disease risks are likely due to environmental factors.

Environmental toxins come in two categories — chemicals and metals. They are accumulated and trapped in the fatty tissue of the human body from medications, food preservatives, and exposure to pesticides, air pollutants and other harmful toxins in the environment.

These toxins come from a variety of sources, but initial exposure actually begins while a baby is still in the womb. According to the CDC's Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals , more than chemicals have been found to be present in the blood and urine of most Americans.

The six most widespread chemicals are:. As one example, research data suggests there is a strong relationship between urine concentrations of Bisphenol A and type 2 diabetes and reduced testosterone levels.

Our liver serves as our body's natural detoxification process. It supports the body's ability to excrete toxins once they have been neutralized, thus reducing the chance they will recirculate and be stored in the body. Unfortunately, as a result of vast exposure to pervasive toxins, the liver is unable to break down fat-soluble toxins.

Even in an athlete, these accumulated toxins get released back into the bloodstream. Both health and performance are impaired as these toxins recirculate in the body. Here are some of the common symptoms that can indicate toxin overload. All of these symptoms affect an athlete's ability to train and focus, and most importantly, play on game day:.

Step 1: Toxins, which are fat soluble, are transported from the intestine to the liver. Step 2: In the liver, toxins undergo phase 1 detoxification to neutralize certain toxins. Step 3: The remainder of the unneutralized toxins move into phase 2 detoxification, which then transforms the remainder into water-soluble compounds.

Step 4: Newly transformed toxins are then transported to either the kidneys, where they are excreted in the urine; or to the gallbladder, where they are eventually excreted via the feces. In an unhealthy liver, toxins are unable to be detoxified at the speed they are brought to the liver.

In these cases, toxins build up and recirculate in the blood, contributing to long-term poor health — and most importantly for athletes, impaired performance. These unneutralized, fat-soluble toxins can be stored in body tissues such as fat, the brain and the nervous system, causing systemic symptoms.

The success of a metabolic detoxification program can be maximized by using well-researched nutrients, vitamins and herbs to balance and support the body's detoxification pathways. The gastrointestinal tract is the first-pass detoxification barrier against large chemical compounds that are foreign to the human body.

My first nutritional recommendation would be two probiotics, specifically B. lactis Bi and L.

Detox diets often involve the use of laxatives, diuretics , vitamins, minerals, teas, and other foods thought to have detoxing properties. It typically includes pollutants, synthetic chemicals, heavy metals, and processed foods, which can negatively affect health. However, popular detox diets rarely identify the specific toxins they aim to remove or the mechanism by which they supposedly eliminate them.

Moreover, no evidence supports the use of these diets for toxin elimination or sustainable weight loss 1 , 2. Your body has a sophisticated way of eliminating toxins that involves the liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin, and lungs. While detox diets have a seductive appeal, your body is fully equipped to handle toxins and other unwanted substances.

Liver enzymes metabolize alcohol to acetaldehyde, a known cancer-causing chemical 4 , 5. Recognizing acetaldehyde as a toxin, your liver converts it to a harmless substance called acetate, which it eliminates from your body 3.

While observational studies have shown that low to moderate alcohol consumption benefits heart health, excessive drinking can cause many health problems 6 , 7 , 8.

Excessive drinking can severely damage your liver function by causing fat buildup, inflammation, and scarring 9. When this happens, your liver cannot function adequately and perform its necessary tasks — including filtering waste and other toxins from your body.

Health authorities recommend limiting alcohol intake to one drink per day for women and two for men. If you currently do not drink, it is recommended not to start as the risk outweigh any health benefits that come with drinking. Sleeping allows your brain to reorganize and recharge itself, as well as remove toxic waste byproducts that accumulate throughout the day 11 , With sleep deprivation, your body does not have time to perform those functions, so toxins can build up and affect several aspects of health Poor sleep has links to short- and long-term health consequences, such as stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity 16 , You should regularly sleep 7 to 9 hours per night to help promote good health If you have difficulties staying or falling asleep at night, lifestyle changes like sticking to a sleep schedule and limiting blue light before bed are useful for improving sleep 19 , 20 , Adequate sleep allows your brain to reorganize, recharge, and eliminate toxins that accumulate throughout the day.

Water does so much more than quench your thirst. It regulates your body temperature, lubricates joints, aids digestion and nutrient absorption, and detoxifies your body by removing waste products However, these processes release wastes in the form of urea and carbon dioxide, which can cause harm if they build up in your blood Water transports these waste products, efficiently removing them through urination, breathing, or sweating.

So staying properly hydrated is important for detoxification The adequate daily water intake is ounces 3. You may need more or less depending on your diet, where you live, and your activity level Research links high consumption of sugary and highly processed foods to obesity and other chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes 27 , 28 , For example, high consumption of sugary beverages can cause fatty liver, a condition that negatively impacts liver function 30 , 31 , You can limit junk food by leaving it on the store shelf.

Not having it in your kitchen takes away the temptation altogether. Replacing junk food with healthier choices like fruits and vegetables is also a healthy way to reduce consumption.

Excess junk food consumption is linked to chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes. These conditions can cause harm to organs important to detoxifying, such as your liver and kidneys.

Antioxidants protect your cells against damage caused by molecules called free radicals. Oxidative stress is a condition that results from the excessive production of free radicals. Your body naturally produces these molecules for cellular processes, such as digestion.

However, alcohol, tobacco smoke, a low nutrient diet, and exposure to pollutants can produce excessive free radicals These molecules cause damage to a range of cells.

Research suggests that free radical damage plays a role in conditions such as dementia, heart disease, liver disease, asthma, and certain types of cancer 34 , Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can help your body counter oxidative stress caused by excess free radicals and other toxins that increase your disease risk.
