I'm very intentional about what I put in my body. So as a nutritional psychiatrist and author of "This Is Your Brain on Food," people often ask me what they should always stock their kitchen with to fuel their brains and stay sharp — at any age.

Make sure to eat ripe berries soon, since they don't last long even in the fridge. At times of the year when fresh, ripe berries aren't available, frozen berries are fine as long as they don't have added sugar or other additives.

Beans, legumes and lentils are also healthy and inexpensive sources of nutrients and vitamins. They're also easy to prepare and can be a side dish or an appetizer. From red cabbage to radicchio to green and yellow bell peppers, buying vibrantly colored veggies will help expand your palate and maximize the range of nutrients that are beneficial to your brain.

The same applies to fruits. Apples, pineapples, kiwis and citrus all come in a wide variety of colors. Just be careful not to overdo it with sweet fruits like grapes and mangoes. The most important color of all is green. My favorites are arugula, romaine, Bibb lettuce, endive and bok choy. Dark chocolate is a great source of antioxidants, as long as you stick to the extra dark stuff that doesn't have added sugar.

Many vitamins are crucial antioxidants, and you can get them from a broad range of dietary sources. If you're considering taking any sort of multivitamin supplement , I recommend checking with your doctor first.

Well-sourced lean poultry, seafood, pastured eggs and grass-fed beef are good choices to ensure you are getting plenty of protein and the essential amino acids that your brain needs to function well. For plant-based sources of protein, organic tofu, tempeh, beans and lentils can be enhanced with spices for flavor.

Servings cups. Metric US Imperial. Warm the oil in a medium pot over medium-low heat. Add the celery, fennel, onion, oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Cook, stirring often, until the vegetables are soft, 8 to 12 minutes.

Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the wine and cook until the liquid is almost completely reduced, 2 to 4 minutes. Add the broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and stir in the lentils, fregola sarda, and parsley stems.

Cook uncovered, stirring often to make sure nothing sticks to the bottom of the pot, at a low simmer until the lentils are tender and the pasta is al dente soft but with a chewy bite , 20 to 30 minutes.

Just before serving, stir in the parsley and any celery leaves, fennel fronds, tarragon, and chives. Grate or shave Pecorino atop if using , and serve hot with lemon wedges on the side.

Store in a tightly covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or the freezer for up to 3 months. The soup will thicken as it sits; add water or broth when reheating and an additional handful of fresh herbs before serving.

Recipe Notes. Tips: Substitute one ounce can of cannellini beans drained for the lentils. One egg contains a third of the recommended daily value of vitamin B7, while also containing small amounts of many of the other B vitamins.

Yogurt is high in both vitamin B2 and vitamin B12, as well as in natural probiotics, which support both gut health and mental health. I like plain Greek yogurt for the added protein.

Legumes such as black beans, chickpeas, edamame and lentils all help to boost your mood and brain health. They are an excellent source of vitamin B9, and include small amounts of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B5 and vitamin B6.

Salmon is naturally rich in all of the B vitamins, especially vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6 and vitamin B Be mindful of the source of your seafood, and remember that frozen or canned salmon is a budget-friendly option, too.

Sunflower seeds are one of the best plant sources of vitamin B5. Leafy greens such as spinach, Swiss chard and cabbage are a great source of vitamin B9.
