Dec 20, Hi Jon! This is a HUGE topic and I am trying to find you a good resource to answer your questions. But here is some information.

Note: I used to work at Treatt, a citrus manufacturer and learned a lot about them. Basically, all citrus oils contain a ton of limonene as you've found, and limonene oxidizes pretty readily in the air to other compounds which have been shown to be skin sensitiziers.

So whenever you use a citrus oil, IFRA recommends using an antioxidant in your fragrance to minimize this effect. Folded oils have less limonene and more oxygenates like aldehyde, so are a bit more stable also usually have darker colors orange and the aldehydes have their own problems such as reactivity in the formula.

Folded lemon in particular is a problem due to the reactivity and instability of Citral. Distilled Lemon and orange are rarely used but distilled lime is sometimes used although it has that typical Pine Sol or cleaner smell.

The most widely used Citrus oil are I think Bergamot and Mandarin, and maybe Grapefruit although that one seems to have fallen out of favor when there were supply problems several years back. I am not a perfumer, but overall I think perfumers tend to only a small amount of the basic citrus CP oils orange, lemon, lime because they don't last very long and have all of the above problems.

Perhaps someone who has worked with them will provide their input. As a former flavorist, I can tell you that citrus products are used a lot, but moreso the washed varieties and emulsions which are necessary for water solubility.
