A sound energy strategy should start with significantly improving energy productivity and efficiency. But even if energy productivity and efficiency are increased, it will still be necessary to expand the energy supply as more sectors are electrified and the use of natural gas is phased out.

One frequent objection to renewables is their variability and the need for fossil-fuel backup. This is a myth. It is quite possible to sustain a reliable electricity system based on renewable energy sources plus a combination of other means, including improved methods of energy management and storage.

As Benjamin Sovacool argued more than a decade ago, harping on the variability of renewables is a rhetorical excusenot a technical barrier.

Zero-emissions electricity by is possible. Emissions targets in the EU and Canada. The challenge to expanding renewables is primarily political, with provinces such as Alberta and Ontario resisting the shift away from their traditional sources of energy.

This is unfortunate because these provinces have great potential to expand solar and wind energy. For example, Alberta is well-suited to solar energy, but its current government has paused development of new solar and wind power projects.

Last year, a study from the David Suzuki Foundation and the University of Victoria showed that Canada can indeed switch to an electricity sector fully based on renewable energy — provided appropriate policy measures are implemented.

These include terminating public financing for fossil-fuel projects, carbon capture and storage, and small modular nuclear reactors; improving energy efficiency; expanding new interprovincial and interregional transmission capacity; and above all prioritizing solar and wind as the primary sources of new electricity generation.

Canada has a special responsibility. The extent of climate change is strongly determined by the total or cumulative amount of carbon dioxide emitted, with often chosen as the start date for calculating the total.

When these cumulative emissions for the period from different countries are compared on a per-capita basis, Canada ranks among the two worst countries. Thus, if we want to address climate change in an equitable way, countries such as Canada have to step up and reduce their emissions rapidly.

However, energy policy is also often shaped by international agreements towards common goals. For example, the Paris Agreement aligns nations on the decarbonization of energy systems 1 and the Sustainable Development Goals work towards ensuring affordable and reliable clean energy access.

An interesting aspect of setting energy policy is the impact that it often has on other sectors. If we take policies pertaining to decarbonization as an example, we may quickly realize that we must also make major changes to building codes, invest in public transportation, incentivize new home appliances i.

Energy Star certified , adjust electricity prices, develop new technologies, or tax carbon emissions. A great example that illustrates the international and national complexities of implementing energy policies can be found in Canada.

However, implementing such policies is not so easy. In Canada, as is the case in many countries, individual provinces and territories or states have power to create their own policies and may reject or even take legal action against federal attempts to implement policy.

One of the easiest ways for citizens to engage in energy policy decisions is to support industry associations related to the issues that they most care about. For example, many countries have associations for various renewable and clean energy sources, energy efficiency, net-zero buildings, and various other special interests.

These organizations often do a great job at engaging policy makers and letting you know when your support is needed for feedback or activism via petitions or political votes.

Another way to get involved is to directly participate in the energy policy-making process. Each country has a unique way of collecting public feedback on policy decisions, but public hearings and workshops are common.

Home Energy Education Topic. Energy efficiency policies and programs help drive the implementation of projects that reduce energy use. Examples include appliance standards, building energy codes, commissioning and retro-commissioning, financial incentives and programs, government lead-by-example programs, and others.

Learn more about energy efficiency policies and programs. State and local governments can implement distributed generation policies and programs to help overcome market and regulatory barriers to implementation.

Examples include community renewables programs, third-party ownership options, interconnection processes, and others.
