The tank should be set near Varueties Vegan Nut Alternatives Fisy, away Fightting the sunlight and Vegan Nut Alternatives Non-GMO protein bars. Males often have a dull appearance as they lack the intricate tail feathers that are typical in all other species apart from the plakat fish. Water movement should be kept to a minimum, which means that power filters and powerheads are not suitable.

Siamese Fighting Fish Varieties -

Super delta betta fish have tails that almost reach degrees but do not fully qualify as half-moons. The half sun betta has a tail that spreads the full degrees just like the half moon. The difference is that the outside edge is spiky, like the rays of the sun.

The rosetail betta fish is also known as the feather tail. These betta fish take the extreme finnage of the half moon to the next level. Their tail also spreads a full degrees, but their fins have much more texture, similar to the petals of a flower.

Such big fins do have a downside, however. The rosetail betta swims slow. It is hard work for the rosetail betta, and they can tire easily.

A tank set up with very slow water flow is recommended to take care of these ornamental betta fish. The Plakat betta fish is a short-finned variety that was bred for fighting. This breed often has a stronger body and jaw than other types like the veil tail. Plakat bettas have degree caudal fins like the half-moons, but their tails are much smaller overall.

With their small round tail and rounded dorsal fins, the plakat betta fish are much more nimble, which makes them better fighters. Plakat betta fish are also less likely to have fin problems from tearing.

The elephant ear betta or dumbo betta fish gets its name from its large pectoral fins. When flared out, these fins look like huge ears when the fish is facing you. The size and shape of the other fins are variable in this breed, but having such big fins can make swimming difficult.

The crown tail betta is a breed with a unique, spiky appearance. They get this look because the fin rays of the tail fin, dorsal and anal fin are long, but the webbing between them is reduced by over a third. While they are beautiful, long-finned varieties like the crown tail will occasionally nip their own tails, and their fin rays tend to curl in poor water quality.

They are stronger swimmers than some other varieties but still need a still water environment to be comfortable. There is also a very similar type of betta known as the combtail betta. A Combtail betta differs by having less than a third of their fin rays exposed.

The koi betta also known as a marble betta gets its name because it has markings just like the koi fish. For all the koi lovers out there, this is one fish you can keep on your desk instead of in a large pond!

Interestingly, the colors and patterns of this type of betta will change over its lifespan. Koi often have blotched, spotted, and speckled body color patterns and are typically composed of three colors, black, white, and orange.

Additionally, yellow, red, and blue is also seen in koi bettas. Alien Bettas are hybrids between different betta species.

They are not as colorful as regular Betta splendens breeds but have an incredible metallic sheen to them with boldly marked fins and black-edged scales. While some keepers refer to unusually large regular bettas as giants, the real giant betta is actually a different species to your regular Siamese fighting fish.

These rare fish are native to Indonesia and Malaysia and are technically known as Betta anabantoides picture from IBC. These large wild bettas need a much larger tank than regular B. splendens but are otherwise pretty easy to care for. Betta Fish are one of the most beautiful varieties of freshwater fish available in the hobby.

Easy to care for with plenty of varieties! The half moon plakat is a great compromise between the more active plakat and the more ornamental longer finned varieties.

These fish generally have much smaller anal and dorsal fins than other betta breeds and the caudal fin is shorter, even though it has a half moon shape. Dragons bettas are also known as dragon scale betta fish.

They are one of the newer betta fish breeds available, and definitely one of the most interesting. They get their name from their large, dragon-like scales.

These fish have thick, shining metallic scales with a silvery-white color. The coloration of the fins and the skin between the dragon scale often varies from black to yellow or red, although many other colors are available.

The double tail betta fish is one of the most unusual betta breeds available. They have two distinct tails caudal fins. Bettas with this tail type have their caudal fin split to the base of the caudal peduncle.

Apart from their double tails, the double tail betta also have larger dorsal fins and shorter, thicker bodies. Female betta fish tend to be a lot less colorful than males. They also usually have much smaller fins, and this makes them less popular.

This might be a little unfair, however, because female bettas are still great-looking fish, and even have some advantages over males. Not all female bettas are drab. If you look around, there are some specimens with colors just as bright as the males.

Female bettas have a small spot under their bellies known as an egg spot. The presence of this spot is probably the most reliable way to identify the sex of a betta. Females are a little less aggressive than males, and this makes it possible to keep more than one in the same tank.

This can still be risky though, so careful planning is necessary before setting up a betta sorority tank. There is a huge number of different betta species found in the wild and many of them make incredible aquarium fish.

splendens have. One of the benefits of the other wild betta species is that they have not been bred to be aggressive, and that makes it possible to keep them together in male and female pairs.

The larger species are predators that will eat smaller fish, so it is best to keep them in species-only tanks. The mustard gas betta is known for its color rather than its tail shape. They get their name from the mustard yellow color of their fins.

Mustard gas bettas have a darker blue or green body, that can look black or even have hints of purple and turquoise in good light. The dramatic contrast between the bright fins and dark body of this betta type makes for a really eye-catching centerpiece fish!

The solid bettas have the simplest color scheme, consisting of just one color. Some of the most stunning bettas are solid colors! Bettas come in just about every color imaginable, except for maybe one exception.

The true purple betta fish is still practically unheard of. Many breeders have tried to develop this color through selective breeding, however.

While many people claim to have seen solid purple bettas, they often turn out to be a royal blue betta in just the right kind of lighting. Albino betta fish are very rare.

They are similar to solid color bettas, but have no color at all! These fish appear white but are not the same as your standard solid white fish. The most visible difference is in eye color. An albino betta will have red eyes, while a solid white betta has black eyes. Bicolor bettas have two dominant colors.

Usually, the body is a different color to the fins. The beautiful mustard gas betta fish is a great example of a bicolor. The butterfly betta is a really interesting-looking color form. These fish are similar to bicolor bettas but they have solid color bodies, and completely or partially cellophane clear colored fins.

Marble bettas are the chameleons of the betta world. These fish actually change color and markings during their lifetime, and the differences can be pretty extreme! Grizzle bettas are rare but beautiful fish that have two colors.

Unlike the bicolor, these fish have fine speckling and the two colors should be a pastel and an iridescent shade. Even though you may buy your betta in a cup or some other tiny container, they will not survive for the long term without a proper home.

There are some amazing complete kits out there that contain everything you need, but if you prefer to set up your own tank, you can learn how here! Although many betta keepers house their fish in very small tanks, I would not recommend anything less than about 5 gallons to start out.

Anything smaller than this is very susceptible to rapid changes in water quality that can be dangerous for your betta fish. In the aquarium hobby, bigger is always better, so if you have the room, a 10 or even 20 gallon would work great too!

Bettas are surprisingly strong jumpers, so make sure your aquarium has a secure lid. Choose a model that is designed to match your tank size and has an adjustable flow rate. For the very long-finned varieties like Rose tails, Half moons, and Elephant ears, I would advise using a simple sponge filter.

Bettas are tropical fish. Set your heater to a temperature of between 75°F and 82°F to make your fish feel right at home, and consider picking up an inexpensive aquarium thermometer to make monitoring your water temperature easier. Betta fish come from environments with plenty of sticks, driftwood , and plants.

Choose at least one decoration that creates a cave or tunnel where your betta fish can hide. These Coconut shells are ideal Betta fish homes. Smooth to the touch, these will not damage your Bettas delicate fins. Betta fins are soft and fragile, which means they can tear easily if they get caught on anything sharp.

To be safe, feel all the surfaces carefully and file away any sharp edges before adding anything to your tank. One of the more unusual sleep behaviors that betta fish exhibit is their ability to sleep out of the water, resting on a leaf or any other flat object protruding from the water.

This is made possible by the betta's labyrinth organ, which acts like a human lung, pulling oxygen from the air instead of from the water. When betta fish sleep, their bright colors will often fade, and when combined with their unusual napping positions, they can appear dead.

Predatory fish will often avoid eating a dead fish because of the risk of contracting diseases and parasites, making this an excellent defensive mechanism. Despite its commercial popularity, little is known about the Betta splendens genome. Current understanding is so limited that there is little evidence for the genetic basis of basic traits, including sex determination.

Additionally, betta fish have been used in several studies to assess the impacts of various environmental contaminants, including oil. Lastly, the betta fish is an excellent candidate for a model organism , particularly for aggression and pigmentation development, due to their extreme phenotypes in these areas.

Currently, the complete B. splendens chromosomal [96] and mitochondrial [97] genomes have been sequenced. Both genomes have yet to be annotated , though a roadmap for future efforts has been outlined. imbellis , has also been sequenced, [98] potentially allowing for meaningful comparison between species in the future.

There are many species in the genus Betta , the majority of which are very morphologically similar. Within Thailand alone there are twelve nominal species [92] with new species being discovered every 5—10 years.

Recent speciation efforts have included use of DNA barcoding to differentiate species, specifically comparing the CO1 gene of the mitochondrial genome, resulting in new theories about the relatedness between species and allowing for the construction of new phylogenetic trees.

The morphological similarity between species that can be distinguished genetically suggests that species radiation with cryptic diversity occurred in the Betta lineage.

Current theories about the species radiation and speciation take into account the geographic considerations of their native habitat of Thailand, and suggest that the speciation is best described by a model of either allopatric or parapatric speciation.

splendens are known for their intense aggression , which has resulted from intense selective pressures imposed upon them from many generations of artificial selection. Fighting strains of B. splendens have been bred for aggression for over six centuries due to the culture surrounding fighting betta fish and betting money on the results.

splendens have been shown to be significantly more aggressive than wild bettas, [21] and in addition show differential responses in cortisol production in new environments.

The extreme genetically driven aggression in fighting strains of B. splendens and their differences from the still-observable wild-type makes them an excellent candidate for a model organism through which to study the genetic basis for aggression.

At present, use of the betta fish as a model organism for studying aggression is in its beginning phases. Little is known about the genetic basis of aggression in betas, though differential degrees of aggression have been observed in different domesticated betta populations.

There is evidence that the genetic basis for aggression in betta fish is not exclusively sex-linked — a study found that female bettas of the fighting strain show significantly higher levels of aggression than their female wild-type counterparts, despite the fact that historically only male bettas have been used in fights and thus artificially selected for aggression.

A recent study found that a fighting pair of bettas will synchronise their gene expression profiles, with particular emphasis on 37 co-expression gene modules, some of which were only synchronised after a certain duration of time had been spent fighting.

Work to identify the genetic basis for aggression has also been performed more generally in other model species, such as zebrafish. However, more progress must be made on the annotation of the betta genome before this is feasible. Due to the incredible variation in pigmentation of adult bettas and visible pigment in developing embryos , bettas are an attractive model organism for studying the genetic basis for coloration.

The genetic basis for the synthesis and regulation of pigmentation in teleost fish is generally poorly understood, [92] [6] and bettas are no exception.

Most work in this area has been done on other model organisms such as zebrafish or African cichlid fish, however as with aggression, work done with other model organisms to identify candidate genes will be tremendously helpful in identifying the genetic basis of pigmentation in bettas.

In , genetic differences polymorphisms at several loci were found between four different color varieties of bettas, [] though the variations were noted to be small.

Later experiments confirmed the presence of genetic variation in hatchery stocks in Thailand, with low average numbers of alleles per locus and high heterozygosity rates.

Notable color phenotypes in B. splendens include the marbled phenotype and the color changing phenotype, the latter of which changes color over the course of its lifetime. While theories for the genetic basis of these phenotypes exist, [65] scientific evidence for the genetic basis of these phenomena are slim to nonexistent.

Some of the few candidate genes identified in the literature specific to bettas are immune related genes , which were found in the first whole-body transcriptome of B. splendens obtained by high-throughput sequencing. Today, Southeast Asia dominates the industry of breeding and distribution of Siamese fighting fish globally.

Initially, male and female fry are raised together in communal tanks up until males begin to display aggression at about 4—5 months of age.

Males are then kept isolated in a half-pint liquor flask, where hundreds of these pints may be arranged tightly packed on the ground in the breeding facility. Daily feeding of usually bloodworms are dispensed into each flask.

At the shoulder of each flask, there is typically a cut to allow water to flow out for an easy water change. Meanwhile, females may be kept in communal tanks until shipping day. Roughly , male bettas are shipped each week from Thailand to countries around the world.

Siamese Fighting Fish Varieties -

Before becoming Thailand , the country was called Siam. Children noticed a particular fish in the rice paddies setting up individual territories. When placed together, these fish would spar. Betting on the duels sprang up, catching the attention of the King.

Recognizing a chance for profit, he set out to regulate the matches and placed a tax on betting. Mythology led people to believe that bettas fought to the death.

Bettas are intelligent, and they only engaged in spars until one male is tired or elected to retreat. People placed bets on the bravery of one fish or another, not the fish that was likely to survive. Advancing to , the King presented a specimen to Danish doctor Theodore Cantor.

Cantor studied the fish, mistakenly classifying them as Macropodus pugnax. It turned out there was already a fish by that name, though. No one claimed doctors were brilliant. Tate Regan later discovered the mistake. Seeing the stunning drama of the fish, he renamed them Betta splendens.

Bettas migrated to the U. in with Frank Locke. The correct pronunciation got lost. Selective breeding grew in interest.

Different colors, patterns, and tails came into favor. Aquarists combined hybrids with the original wild-type to create the fish you find today. Wild bettas lack the iconic dramatic fins. Instead, they have dull, grey-green scales and much shorter fins. But did you realize each difference represented a specific type?

Believe it or not, there are over SEVENTY types of bettas in the world! That flowing tail is one of the most distinguishing characteristics of bettas. Wild bettas might have short tails, but selective breeding has created a variety of dramatic options. You usually see a full, glorious tail in a typical round shape.

What sets this type of betta apart are the webbing and rays that extend through the tail fin itself. The rays are quite prominent, with webs that extend at least two-thirds of the way between each ray.

How to tell a crowntail from a combtail? Both have the same rounded tails. The gene for the double tail betta exists in every type of betta.

What results is a betta with two distinct caudal fins. There are two caudal peduncles for the tail to attach to, as well. While dramatic and beautiful, this type of betta comes at a price. For some reason, double tail bettas are more prone to swim bladder disorder.

Elephant ear bettas break the mold. Instead of tail fin shape, they earn their name from the prominent pectoral fins on either side of their body. They resemble fanciful Flamenco dancers. Just take it easy on their water current as those fins make it difficult for them to swim correctly.

They need a much gentler water flow than other types of bettas. They also tend to have longer dorsal and anal fins than other types of bettas — a side effect of the selective breeding for their beautiful tails. Halfmoons come with a few warnings.

Those long, flowing fins are prone to tearing. These colorful fish most closely resemble the wild version. They have short, rounded tails, and some people mistake them for females. Plakats have a faster swimming ability than other types of bettas.

Unencumbered by those fancy fins, they can dart around the tank. However, they also have a strong jumping ability, so keep a firm lid on the aquarium to prevent accidental escapes. Rosetail bettas developed out of the halfmoon betta.

The difference is extensive branching of the rays within the tail itself. The branching creates a ruffled appearance similar to the folded petals of a rose — hence the name.

It would also provide you with in-depth detail about the species, along with its genes. The veiltail is perhaps the most prevalent tail style among betta fish. It features a long, wavy tail that curves straight down.

The term originates from its glittery and colorless tail, which resembles veil-like when it swims in full motion. It makes a fantastic option for newbies as it is readily available and requires less care and attention. These species are attractive, fertile, and usually fit and active, yet when they are stressed, they might nibble at their gills.

As with other bettas, they are susceptible to unhygienic environmental quality, so ensure to maintain their surroundings fresh and sanitary. It would also be a great idea to select lights that are not too intense because veil tails could be skeptical and experience anxiety in an aquarium with powerful artificial light.

In comparison to male veiltail fishes, females have softer coloration and smaller fins. Crowntail bettas need a fair amount of attention than some other species of bettas due to their complex limbs and peaks on their dorsal. It is necessary to ensure that the aquarium is free from pointed things that might hook on the tail, and you should also use precautions when rinsing the aquarium.

The crown tail is susceptible to shattering the edges of their wings, and sometimes females especially with small tails could have a twisted dorsal fin. But aside from that, crowntails are often strong and fruitful. Additionally, because their tails have less weaving than those of other fish, they rarely nibble at their dorsal fins.

Every time somebody observes your fish, they will be struck by the stunning combination of the colored torso and the white fins.

Combtails, commonly known as half-sun betta species, are a more recent kind. The combtail seems to have a gap between every blade rather than matting that wraps around it from blade to blade. The dorsal fin resembles a wide-toothed brush as a result of this.

Even though this type often bears fruit and is in good shape, the dorsal fin can occasionally experience support problems.

Although there is no health risk, this could give your pet a sad face. The double tail often referred to as a twin tail betta, features broad and extended anal, ventral, and rear frills. They might be categorized as a rare kind since they are spectacular, unique, and endangered. These are often available in a broad range of colors and textures.

Fish with double tails have undergone a mutation that negatively affects their health. They usually experience swim bowel issues, which makes them vulnerable to tail rot as well as other disorders of the tail.

Double-tail betta fish are costly as compared to most betta types. It is due to their uniqueness and attractiveness. The fact that these species were successfully bred by a small number of expert breeders makes them a highly valuable betta. This bettas title comes from its spade-shaped caudal tail.

Its tip has a broad bottom that gradually gets smaller. Although it seems to have a similar appearance to a round-tailed betta, the caudal spine is pointed rather than spherical. These come in a huge variety of color combinations and styles as well. They are usually strong species with no specific or unusual health issues other than the common betta issues.

Due to their exceptional survivability, spadetail fish are a good option for inexperienced aquarists. If you maintain their aquarium spotless and give them lots of hidden passageways, you can easily have them as a pet.

These species have a unique personality and are not as attractive as other bettas. It has a tail that resembles the uppercase D. Apart from having a large caudal tail, a half-moon possesses broader anterior and ventral fins than other freshwater bettas.

Given how much fun it is to observe half-moon bettas dive, they are among the most well-known species to have in your tank. Although they may appear fragile, these species are actually incredibly strong. You can find a lot of them in fish shops and pet shops.

Although they are susceptible to common betta health disorders, they are overall strong, active, and fit species. The tails of over Halfmoon betta species are identical to those of Halfmoon fish. The caudal tails differ from other fins because they have the ability to fan out more than degrees while they are fully flared, giving them a more than half-circle appearance.

Be careful while selecting your tank buddies to prevent aggressive behavior. To prevent violent behavior, always keep one male betta in your tank. Its tail is in a triangular form, which is identical to the capital letter D in the Greek language.

Its appearance is nearly identical to that of a half-moon; however, one significant distinction is that its tip is shorter and cannot turn degrees. You can easily discover a Delta that complements your personality because they are available in a broad variety of colors and designs.

This species is very strong, active, healthy, and does not have fin rotting issues like other bettas. A delta fish and a super delta share a lot of similarities. Super deltas have an extended tail that ranges in angle from to degrees, which is the primary distinction.

Half-moon bettas are those in which the fin extends to degrees. Another feature that distinguishes a super delta is the absence of crowning or weaving on its strokes. It provides the super delta with a sleek appearance that many viewers believe to be quite attractive.

Although many fish have striking color combinations across several tail styles, but most of the combinations are not compatible with every tail style.

Super delta fins are usually regarded as highly attractive and are a good option for both novice and professional betta keepers. The ideal color choices for super deltas are bright tones such as white, yellow, or pastel pink because dark tones can sometimes appear dull. Crown tail and Halfmoon fish were selectively bred to create the half sun fish.

It features a half-moon-shaped tail with a degree span and an expanded caudal pad weaving the same as the crowned tail. Siamese battle species with a half-sun pattern could be violent despite their beauty. Be careful when choosing different betta species to include in the aquarium. A rosetail fish is a gorgeous half-moon mutation.

However, its dorsal fin has considerable sprouting on the edges of the gills, which is the most noticeable feature. In the end, it causes an overlapping, giving the dorsal fin a rose-like appearance. Although the rose-shaped tip is often attractive, it does have one drawback — it is bulky.

The fish may find it challenging to navigate, as a result, particularly as it gets mature and bulkier. Fish with a combtail have a large fan-like rear fin with a wide, but less than degree spread. Fish with a caudal fin that is degrees or wider are not considered to be combtails, but half suns, which we will discuss below.

Importantly, a combtail betta fish also has rays that extend beyond the webbing of their tail, giving them a pointed, or comb-like, appearance. Crowntail betta fish are very closely related to the combtail. They are an easy fish to identify as their fins and tail webbing only extend a short way down each ray.

As a result, their tails look very spiky and crown-like. Because they have such little webbing in their tails, crowntail bettas often break their tail rays and can end up with a bent tail.

Crowntail bettas can also have double or even triple ray extensions, in which multiple rays in their tails or fins appear to extend from larger central rays.

Delta bettas are an extremely popular and beautiful variety of betta fish, having triangular tails with webbing that typically extends to the tip of each ray—meaning there is no crowning of their rays. Instead, their tails have a rounded-looking edge. They are named after the Greek letter delta, and they can be found in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

Delta bettas come in two sub-varieties, which are referred to as being delta or super delta. Super delta betta fish have a wider tail than the standard delta. As their name suggests, the double tail betta has a double caudal rear fin. It is a popular misconception that their double-tail is actually just one tail split in half; however, that is not the case.

Double tails have two complete and separate fins that are not conjoined or split in any way. While a popular trait among aquarists, the double tail is actually the result of a genetic mutation that causes the fish some difficulty and usually results in a shortened lifespan.

Half moon betta fish are named for the wide spread of their tails, which typically spread to a full degrees, giving their tails the shape of a capital D.

As well as having very wide caudal fins, their dorsal and anal fins are also much wider than a typical betta fish, although these do not spread to a full degrees. The difference between the half moon and over half moon betta fish is that the over half moon has a caudal fine that extends beyond degrees.

The half sun betta is a relatively new hybrid fish that is the result of selectively crossing a half moon betta with a crown tail betta.

The resulting fish has a full degree wide tail with rays that extend beyond their tail webbing. The plakat betta fish is known for its short, almost stumpy tail, closely resembling the tail found in wild betta fish.

While traditionally plakat betta fish have only had rounded or pointy tails, thanks to selective breeding, they can now also be found with short half moon or short crown tails. In this case, they are referred to as half moon plakat and crowntail plakat, respectively.

Considered by many to be the same variety, and by some as two distinct fish, the rosetail betta fish has the most magnificent, free-flowing tails of all betta fish varieties—making them both the most beautiful and also most sought after of all betta fish.

Yet their flashy appearance comes at a cost, both in their price and to the health of the fish themselves. After years of constant cross-breeding to develop their flashy tails, the gene pool within which these fish are bred has shrunk.

This, combined with some less than ethical breeding practices, has led to rosetail bettas being much more likely to suffer from tumors, genetic disorders, and other health conditions than many other more common betta fish varieties.

Their long flowing fins tend to be more susceptible to fin rot than other varieties, and rosetail bettas are also more prone to nipping at their own tails and fins than betta varieties with shorter or more compact tails. The round tail betta is an immensely popular betta fish that can usually be found in a suburban pet store.

Their namesake tail resembles that of the delta betta, only without straight edges, resulting in their tail having a round, almost circular appearance. Spade tail betta fish are quite similar in appearance to the round tail, except that their tail is not rounded, and rather comes to a single point at the tip, forming the shape of a spade from a deck of playing cards.

From a competition perspective, the spade-shaped tail should be symmetrical and even on both sides. The veil tail is by far the most common tail variety in betta fish.

A very pretty-looking fish, veil tails were at one time extremely popular on the show and competition circuit. However, due to their mass-market appeal and over breeding, they are no longer seen as desirable for these purposes.
