Common useage of the term wrought iron is to mean any decorative thing made out steel and usually painted black. This could be applied to wrought iron furniture, chandeliers, gates etc. Strictly speaking in blacksmith terms wrought iron is actually a type of metal. Much the same as talking about sand and clay being different types of earth. The definition of wrought is to shape by hammering. So technically to be wrought iron it has to be hammered to shape. Today instead of using just iron we use steel a mix of iron and carbon. So to make my sculptures I use hand wrought steel, or forged steel to create the forms. Wrought iron as material has not been commercially produced on a large scale since the early 's, so we are forced to use steel. Lets not confuse things too much, I will use the term wrought iron sculpture. If you are a blacksmith then know I mean forged steel. The joy of working the steel hot is that it becomes very flexible and can create long self supporting shapes when it cools. Most of my sculptural work has these free flowing organic lines in it. The sculpture at the above left stands about 30 inches high and is completely forged and textured. It can be argued that wrought iron sculpture is not limited to non functional pieces of work. Le Secq was not alone in noticing this fading heritage. The shop was photographed by Eugène Atget , who documented streets and storefronts before their demolition during the Haussmann years with a similar attention to old world details. The connection between the sign and photograph is especially valuable as Le Secq rarely recorded the exact provenance of the ironwork.
When Le Secq died in , his younger son Henri Le Secq des Tournelles who added a space in their last name took up the iron mantle. He was exceptionally keen on amassing encyclopedic series. Styled as he was in Dickensian squalor, the young Le Secq was as studious with his acquisitions as his father.
He loaned more than 1, iron objects to the Exposition Universelle, where they were so popular that the collection remained in Paris for twenty years as part of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
Then Le Secq approached the city of Rouen with an offer to donate the collection in its entirety, and in it was opened as a museum in the former church of Saint-Laurent. The collection belongs to the city of Rouen, for Rouen to preserve, select, keep a vigilant watch over, and give immortal youth to … and thus it will not perish!
More fortunate than some of its sister collections, it will not be broken up by the fiery blast of an auction. The now over 16, ironwork objects in the Rouen museum are still installed in the old Gothic church. At the Clark, the examples were shown in the Tadao Ando-designed Michael Conforti Pavilion, contrasting the hand-forged material to the modern lines and glass walls of the luminous space.
