They might try to remove multiple food groups and spend copious amounts of money on testing to try to figure out a connection to their stomach pains and emergency pit stops on runs.

All too often, this leads to more confusion, a rocky relationship with food and the potential for nutrient deficiencies to develop.

If you have a true food allergy the response is based in the immune system, while food sensitivities and intolerances stem from the digestive system. When you have a food allergy and your body encounters a small amount of this food, it produces a histamine response and symptoms such as dizziness, swelling, nausea and hives can occur.

Traditional food allergy testing is done by a skin prick or blood test and measures a protein called Immunoglobulin E or IgE. The presence of IgE antibodies usually indicates a true immune response.

Food sensitivity tests usually measure the presence of IgG antibodies, not IgE, and these antibodies have not been reliably shown to identify food allergies or sensitivities.

In fact, many people produce IgG antibodies just after eating food. Everything I do as an athlete, I think about maximizing performance. If you have an allergy to certain types of food and you are putting those into your body, your body is constantly fighting those foods as opposed to repairing muscle and helping you with recovery or performance.

There are a lot of different terms used to talk about the way we react to food. Here is a quick break down to help you understand the difference. I love this graphic from Healthy Eaton which helps define better food allergy vs food sensitivity.

Food Allergy The body has an immediate adverse reaction to the food which can be as minor as hives to as critical as swelling that closes the airway. These are the kinds of allergies that you hear about in reference to an EpiPen.

We are not talking about this kind of allergy today. Food Intolerance The body lacks specific enzymes to digest a particular food. The two most commonly known are gluten and dairy which cause GI distress because the body cannot appropriately process the food, but are not life threatening like an allergy.

Food Sensitivity Often lumped in with intolerance, a food sensitivity is exactly that…something which your body has an adverse reaction to from 45 minutes to 3 days after eating it. Cumulative dose is an important factor for most athletes. Doing everything right and feeling fatigued, frequent headaches, muscle aches…might be worth getting tested!

The cheapest and most effective way to know if you have an intolerance is to do an elimination diet. I decided instead of following a standard 21 day elimination diet, I would do a shorter 3 day rotation diet and see if I could identify some main issues.

There area few ways to ensure any of these things are successful:. It can be used for up to foods, gluten, gliadin and milk proteins — whey and casein. As you can see under my severe column is strawberries and peanuts. Interestingly these are two that I probably could have easily figured out on my own if I knew what I was looking for!

Sometimes it really is that easy. Do you feel any different? If so, you may have pinpointed the problem. Can you get over food sensitivities?

Turns out that as you heal your stomach {from removing inflammation causing foods} you will likely lessen severity of allergies and over time with complete healing could be totally free of any sensitivities.

This is a LONG process though. How reliable is the ALCAT test? What are the most common food sensitivities? My friend Amber at Awakened Nutrition has a great program especially focused on soy and beating belly bloat! Gastrointestinal issues are typically considered evidence of a food intolerance.

In these instances, it becomes more difficult to identify the problem or make an association between diet and physical issues that are seemingly unrelated.

Instead, they look to other possibilities to explain their symptoms. Cravings can also be a sign of food intolerance. Inevitably, what goes up must come down, and you are likely to experience a very low point after you consume these foods, for example headaches or negative changes in mood.

This is the cycle of cravings in motion. We see this when people go on an elimination diet and initially feel worse. The highs they were getting from problem foods are not there any more. The good news is that if you are truly able to avoid the problematic foods, the associated cravings subside relatively quickly after you remove them from your diet and mood swings and other symptoms are alleviated.

One way to pinpoint your own feel-good foods? Be on the lookout for things you consume daily and feel anxious about giving up. All foods contain chemicals—either natural or artificial or both—and some intolerances are the result of a chemical buildup; in other words, a small amount of the problem food may not produce any adverse effects, but over time and with exposure to either that same food or other foods containing similar chemicals you are sensitive to, a threshold may be reached and symptoms may appear.

This is important to keep in mind. Intolerances caused by chemical buildups can be much trickier to identify. Food intolerances are highly individual, but many are genetic—they just manifest themselves in different ways. When I began exploring my own food intolerances, I shared my experiences and knowledge with my family, encouraging them to also try making some changes.

My parents are world-champion masters rowers, so they were already eating a very healthy diet and maintaining an extremely high level of fitness.

But my dad has suffered from gut issues all his life. Although he realized his problems were probably not normal, he had fully accepted them as his normal.
