The human person is not only sacred but also social. Each person lives and develops in community. The way we organize society economically and politically, including the way our agricultural system is structured, im­pacts human digni­ty. In our tradition, justice has three key dimensions: commutative, distributive, and social.

While Catholic teaching calls us to seek the common good of the entire human family, Scripture and our Catholic tradition also call us to a priority concern for the poor and vulnerable.

Like the prophets of the Old Testament, Jesus calls us to care for the powerless and those on the margins of society. For us, hungry children, farmworkers, and farmers in distress are not abstract issues.

They are sisters and brothers with their own God-given dignity. While some are doing well, others are vulnerable or struggling and poor.

Those who farm, work in the fields or on ranches, and process our food must have decent wages and a decent life.

Agricultural trade practices with poorer countries must be fair and must seek to protect the dignity of farmers in those countries. An important moral measure of the global agricultural system is how its weakest participants are treated.

We believe that the economy, including the agricultural economy, must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living.

Catholic teaching on the dignity of work calls us to engage in productive work and supports the right to decent and fair wages, health care, and time off. Workers have a right to organize to protect these rights, to choose to join a union, and to have a voice in the workplace.

Employers are obligated to treat their workers with dignity, providing decent wages, safe working conditions, and humane living conditions. The Black Panther Party was born in Oakland, California at a time when the United States refused to address poverty and hunger in African-American communities and failed to end ongoing harassment and criminalization of poor, urban African Americans by the police force.

Although, the Black Panther Party was targeted and villainized by the FBI, their goals were to protect, educate, and set up community programs in Black communities to address discrimination, and economic and social injustices. Their most successful program was the Free Breakfast for Children Program.

The Free Breakfast for Children Program focused national attention on the urgent need to give poor children nutritious meals so that they could be successful in school.

In a senate hearing, the National School Lunch Program Director admitted that the Free Breakfast for Children Program fed more poor children than the entire state of California.

This ultimately influenced funding for the Federal School Breakfast Program we have today, which feeds over 14 million children annually.

African Americans still disproportionally suffer from poverty, obesity, and food insecurity in a land of abundance. Their communities are still targeted and villainized by people in power. Eating while Black should be a right, not a privilege.

It is time to sever the roots of racism and begin planting seeds for CHANGE. Disparities in pay may also be another factor based on race, sexuality, and gender. But some individuals and institutions continue to discriminate according to gender or sexual orientation. The effects of racial inequality have been rippling throughout society, affecting education, healthcare, representation, and even law enforcement.

Exercising the right to vote is another major social justice issue right now and it causes social injustice. People who live in poverty are extremely prone to exploitation, crime, and abuse.

If they cannot take effective and real recourse against such actions, it only perpetuates inequality and impurity, thus further exacerbating their vulnerability. Accountability will turn into a sham.

The increased exclusion and vulnerability will also hamper their capacity to pursue justice that can continue to be passed down to one generation after the other.

The only way to defeat poverty is if we can make the law work for everyone. Access to justice is important to tackle and address the primary causes of poverty, vulnerability, and exclusion. Accessible and effective justice systems can serve as tools for developing jurisprudence on social and economic rights.

These systems can mandate affordable housing provision, enforcement of human rights of people who live in poverty or remedy their exploitation by private or public actors. This access to justice also serves as a critical lever for gender equality.

It is more likely for women to be poor all over the world, but women also happen to face additional obstacles or burdens in accessing justice mechanisms. Abuses and crimes based on gender are not effectively dealt with or well legislated most of the time. Prejudice and public stigma also play a role in silencing abused women and stopping them from seeking justice.

An obstructed judicial access will only end up feeding the cycle of gendered violence and poverty and perpetuating impunity for crimes due to gender.

Millions of people all over the world are actually food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the lack of constant access to adequate food for a healthy and active life. It is a must to remember that while food insecurity and hunger are closely connected, these concepts are distinct. Extensive research shows the complexity of the food insecurity problem.

A lot of people lack the resources to address their basic needs, which are challenges that can increase the food insecurity risk of a family. While food insecurity is closely linked with poverty, not everyone who lives below the poverty line suffers from food insecurity.

In fact, even those who live above the poverty line can also suffer from food insecurity. The United States, for example, is a country filled with educational gains but unfortunately, women in the country earn lower than men.

There is a huge wage gap between men and women because of educational level and race. Women have fewer earnings because they are only allowed to be part of fields with low potential for earning. Even if a woman and man work in the same field, the woman still earns significantly lower than the man.

It is a gender equality-based injustice. It may be but the world continues to face some pressing social justice issues, which include the following:. This might come as a surprise but yes, body autonomy remains an issue.

There remains a part of society that believes that what people choose to do with their bodies must be well within their rights. Many countries are having a hard time with the Muslim veil issue that comes in various forms such as the niqab and body covering.

Even to this day, thousands of children get neglected across the globe in addition to physical, moral, and sexual mistreatments.

The whole world has been seeing and experiencing the effects of climate change, and the threats that it poses to human has become more evident now than ever.

For many people, gun violence is considered a public health issue. However, its consequences can be felt in all areas of life in the world.

S:US is a social justice agency and food security is one of the social justice pillars at S:US. S:US is deeply committed to ensuring an equitable, participatory food system by supporting the food security of the people they serve, like us, and elevating their voices and power within food system work.

Food security means more than just access. Being food secure means having food available, having access to that available food, having that access and availability be stable over time, and having the tools and knowledge to use the food to meet nutritional, dietary, cultural, and personal or household needs.

S:US staff support you when you want to go back to school. My wellness coach helps with SNAP recertification ahead of time. She asks if I have food and I like that. I tend to isolate myself, so I like that they check in on you.

Some are close by so I go to those. They have canned goods, vegetables, sometimes dairy products, cereal, stuff like that.

They helped me find pantries. Most of us feel pretty good about our food situations right now because we receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP commonly called food stamps.

We are able to regularly get food from food pantries, and get services and help from S:US. Without this support, we would not have access to sufficient food supplies or food of adequate quality to meet our needs. Access to a variety of food is especially important for those of us who have various health concerns, like diabetes, kidney failure, and mental illness.

And getting SNAP or going to the food pantries carries stigma, despite these vital resources helping many people during different times of their lives.

Sometimes I go to Costco. S:US helps me find pantries. I have a son who has autism. He has sensitivity to textures in foods, low tolerance to certain foods. I go to pantries if I have time. I bring up my food issues with S:US and they help. They gave me a one-time grant to buy groceries and gave me a list of pantries in the neighborhood.

Fruits and vegetables cost more. I would like to get them if I had the budget. I can go down to the office of my building when I need food. My case worker will bring back bread, meat, stuff like that. At times, I can get the food I like. Sometimes I get the stuff I need but not the stuff I want.

I can walk there. I go to the market next door for food too. I might go to one around the corner after this.

Re-Examining Hunger Through the Lens of Social Justice The National Black Food and Justice Alliance is a coalition of over forty organizations representing hundreds of Black urban and rural farmers, land stewards, and organizers all over the US. Example: La Via Campesina is the coordinating body of an international movement that advocates for the interests of smallholder farmers, including food policy reform and knowledge sharing for agroecology.

Currently active in 81 countries, La Via Campesina represents about million small-scale farmers and agricultural workers and advocates for peasant- and worker-driven agroecological farming that celebrates the value of traditional ecological farming knowledge held by Indigenous and agrarian communities.

La Via Campesina first developed the term food sovereignty and brought it to public discourse during the World Food Summit as a response to the harmful structures of globalized extractive food systems. Since , La Via Campesina has led opposition to harmful neoliberal food policies such as the subsidization of commodity crops and the dumping of excess commodity crops as international food aid.

In , La Via Campesina coordinated peasant and smallholder farmer resistance to the strong representation of agribusiness interests and priorities at the first UN Food Systems Summit.

Their priorities include national and international support for democratic reform of food and farming to support justice for farmers and calls for an international commitment to agroecology as a solution to global environmental degradation. Food justice education within underserved BIPOC communities can spread knowledge of nutrition, community gardening, and connections between food and justice, empowering members with resources to grow and obtain healthy, fresh food.

Food education aimed at youth can help young people make connections between food production and systemic injustices in food provision and understand how their choices can contribute to a just food system transformation.

Over 21 million workers are employed in the US food system, yet they are politically and economically disenfranchised. Food workers make valuable contributions to food production and distribution; defending the rights of workers is key to challenging exploitative food systems.

Example: The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is a worker-led advocacy organization that promotes the human rights of food chain workers. They have fought against human trafficking and gender-based violence, providing worker-to-worker rights education. Externally, the Coalition educates consumers about the exploitation of food chain labor and operates Fair Food programs where buyers pay a price premium that is passed on to workers.

Coalition of Immokalee Workers has been one of the most visible and successful workers advocacy organizations in US history, inspiring many related organizations and empowering the broader food justice movement. Equal opportunity work and education are contributors to better food access. Food service workers are disproportionately women and people of color, reflecting the continuation of historical patterns of economic exclusion. Example: Restaurant Opportunities Centers United gathers national data on the demographics and experiences of food service employees, advocating for livable wages and safe, healthy working conditions for all restaurant workers.

Expanding food access encompasses community-based initiatives, including urban gardens, farm-direct Community Supported Agriculture, farmers markets, food pantries, and other initiatives that bring additional healthy, fresh food to people and communities struggling with secure food access.

However, achieving universal food access also depends on broader solutions to the poverty and income inequality that contribute to food apartheid.

Examples: Black Farmers Collective is one of several organizations working to grow and deliver fresh produce to communities that struggle with food access. They also provide training to enable food insecure communities to start cooperative urban gardens. Los Angeles-based grocery service SUPRMARKT provides local low-income Black and brown communities with affordable, organic, vegan food to make healthy diets accessible to all.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century and intensifying since the mids, US farming has followed a consistent trend toward fewer, larger farms, vertical integration of farms, and corporate consolidation.

Small and mid-size farmers have been increasingly displaced from their land and excluded from markets dominated by agribusiness corporations. Ensuring equal opportunity land access is crucial for historically marginalized communities to take back control of food production, a key pillar of both food justice and food sovereignty.

Examples: The Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust uses a community land and conservation trust model to foster BIPOC land stewardship and environmentally sustainable farming practices.

Family Agriculture Resource Management Services F. provides financial assistance and other forms of support to help struggling Black farmers retain their land. Industrial agriculture relies on monocropping—a practice that has vastly reduced plant and soil microbe biodiversity—to produce industrial commodity crops, including the soy and corn that support intensive farming of animals.

We know that we cannot end hunger by simply providing emergency food assistance. To truly end hunger, we need to dismantle the root causes continuing food insecurity.

The root causes of hunger are systemic injustices — including the intersectionalities of racism, classism, sexism and more — which create and perpetuate the conditions that sustain hunger and poverty.

We center food justice in our mission not only through our bodies of work, but also by intentionally supporting and developing Oregon Food Bank staff.
