DHA and EPA fatty acids are found in marine sources including salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, and herring. Both land and water omega-3s are important, but Uma Naidoo, a physician and director of nutritional and lifestyle psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, says the marine-based fatty acids are more important.

And she says vegetarians or people who don't like fish need not fret because one can still obtain these omega-3s through algae-derived supplements or fish oil.

Obtaining those nutrients, one way or another, is vital—especially because most people aren't getting nearly enough. The American Heart Association AHA recommends eating two servings of fish per week to do so, but in one report , calls Americans' intake of omega-3s "abysmally low.

The AHA suggests including omega-3s in one's diet to "reduce heart disease and stroke risk," but the new A merican Journal study shows why omega-3s are also important for our lungs—which supply the body with oxygen and remove waste gasses like carbon dioxide, plus play a vital role in immune health.

Past studies, including a analysis on why some ethnic groups suffer worse lung disease outcomes than others, and pooled research that provides important data on chronic lower respiratory diseases, have measured lung health in people before.

Other studies have even looked at how omega-3s affect inflammation generally, with different research showing that omega-3s may reduce bacterial lung infections. Until now, however, robust research showing the association between omega-3s' anti-inflammatory properties and improved lung health has been lacking.

In the new study, the researchers demonstrated the association between omega-3s' anti-inflammatory properties and improved lung health in two ways.

First, they analyzed blood sample data of more than 15, Americans whose well-being had been tracked for an average of seven years though many participants were tracked for up to 20 years. Such participants were racially diverse, had an average age of 56, and skewed slightly female.

By measuring blood samples from all participants, the researchers were able to identify a connection between omega-3s and declining lung function related to age, says Bonnie Patchen, a nutritionist and researcher at Cornell University and one of the study's authors.

Dalli said further research also is needed to discover if fatty acids have the same anti-inflammatory effects in people older than 45 and in those who already have cardiac disease.

People with chronic inflammatory diseases, he noted, don't produce the same number of these anti-inflammatory molecules that healthy people do. The proper formulation of fatty acids also remains to be determined. Currently, the FDA has approved two medications, one that contains EPA and another that contains a mix of EPA and DHA, and there are numerous supplements on the market with various formulations.

Our results indicated that, compared to different control groups, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated statistically significantly with reduced levels of Apo AII, triglycerides, and HDL, as well as improved levels of fasting blood glucose among diabetic patients.

Omega-3 fatty acids also are associated with statistically significant increases in LDL levels among CVD patients. Other biomarkers may experience beneficial reductions with omega-3 use among diabetic or cardiovascular patients.

Some studies have introduced omega-3 fatty acids to decrease levels of fasting plasma glucose FPG and improve lipid profiles, inflammatory mediators, and reduce insulin resistance 58 , 59 , However, low dosages of omega-3 fatty acids may have limited effects on insulin resistance, inflammatory markers, and lipid profiles among HIV patients and certain other populations These molecules can have anti-diabetic properties because of improved insulin metabolism and the anti-atherosclerotic and anti-inflammatory effects attributable to the resolution of inflammation, as mentioned previously As a consequence, the reduced proinflammatory mediators on the one hand, and the increased production of anti-inflammatory molecules, such as adiponectin, on the other will improve insulin resistance 46 , 64 , However, omega-3 intake may change the HDL cholesterol subfraction composition and absolute size.

Omega-3 fatty acids also lower triglycerides by reducing the hepatic secretion of VLDL cholesterol Further, it may decrease triglycerides and increase LDL cholesterol in patients with hypertriglyceridemia Our study has shown LDL level increases and triglyceride level reductions.

Thus, this systematic review summarized all published results of omega-3 fatty acid intake on these aspects. Several investigators have proposed this hypothesis because of their beneficial effects on morphologic and inflammatory markers 76 , However, until long-term follow-up studies are conducted, the results must be interpreted with caution.

Our review has several strengths and limitations. Its strengths include our comprehensive search strategy, the inclusion only of randomized clinical trials, the low risk of bias among the studies selected, and restricted inclusion criteria e.

These criteria allowed us to investigate their potential benefits on lipid profiles and inflammatory biomarkers systematically. The limitations pertain primarily to the inability to draw strong conclusions based on significant statistical and clinical results.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may be associated with improvements in inflammatory biomarkers and lipid profiles among diabetic and cardiovascular patients. However, the review did not identify clear benefits for these markers and profiles.

Clinicians should be aware of these potential benefits before prescribing omega-3, and it is essential that patients consult with clinicians before any omega-3 intake because of the current limited data on its effects.
